About:Requirements for Permanent Residence Permit

proof of no criminal record from UK

I am just in process of getting my proof of no criminal record from the uk. I live in China.
However my Chinese wife has told me that once I get it I have to Fly back to the Uk and go to the Chinese embassy in london to get it stamped!!! This is nonsense surely. Fly to the UK? That would be very expensive and why would the Chinese Embassy there want to see it. I'm working here in China!

Do you mean to use the no criminal record to apply for work permit to work here? if yes, then it should be authenticated by Chinese embassy in London.

If the document was issued by a British government department, you may send it for legalizations to FCO or an authorised department by FCO. Then submit the document to the Chinese embassy. Personal attendence is not required, you can entrust someone else to apply for legalization.

You must present the original and photocopy of your passport at the Chinese Consulate in London or Manchester. Legalization by the FCO is required but now can only be done by post. In the past it was possible to do it in person, but that has changed. Legalization at the Chinese Consulate takes 3 or 4 working days if Express service is paid otherwise it is 7 working days ( excluding weekends ). I did it once before and am doing it again later this year. It is a pain, but I reckon you must go back to UK.

You can employ an agent to present the certificate for Legalization at the Consulate but you need to trust that your passport does not disappear in the post. The forms for legalization can be downloaded from the Chinese Embassy website, I found that the Manchester website was more user friendly. It explains about using a representative if you cannot appear in person. Good luck. I decided to go in person as a reason for a holiday also :-)

Alan, please note that the office for legalization is NOT the visa issuing office in central Manchester, but it is at the Consulate on the outskirts of the city centre at Denisson Road. If you decide to apply in Manchester as opposed to London or Edinburgh.

A friend of mine was going back to the Uk in Autumn, so he took the certificate and a copy of my passport.
The Embassy were very unhelpful and unfriendly (his words) and refused to stamp it. They insisted on my personal appearance. As it is only valid for one year I must do it all again , then fly to the Uk.This is incredibly inconvenient and expensive. Despite what others say, you cannot appoint an agent- you must be there. Ridiculous!!!
