HKSAR passport vs 72-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing

I'm a dual citizen holding both Canadian and HKSAR passport. Planning to travel from Singapore and transiting in Beijing for 3 days, and return to Canada. My Canadian passport is expiring, so if I use the HKSAR passport, can I stay in Beijing free for 72 hours?

No, HK SAR Passport need to apply for Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents (港澳通行证). Your Canadian passport is ok if it is valid.

I thought 通行证 is only valid if I travel to mainland from Hong Kong or Macau. Not if I enter mainland via other countries, right?

Hi Andy, HK SAR passport is ok for entry unless the stopover is less than 24 hours without leaving the airport. Otherwise, home return permit 回乡证 is required. So, in your situation, you can use your Canadian passport for this 72 hour free transit.
