About:China Visa on Arrival

Is he required to obtain any type of business visa in advance?

My boss will be traveling from the United States to Hong Kong on business. While there, he will be traveling to Shanghai.

How long will he stay in Shanghai? and how about his itinerary? US passport holders are eligible to get free transit permit for up to 72 hours if they transit through Shanghai airport with confirmed ticket.
