About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

do I need a tourist visa? If not, do I apply for something at the Beijing airport?

Nate from USA:

I am flying from Incheon on a Sunday to Bejing, and then on Tuesday from Beijing to the U.S.

I have a US passport.

If the stopover in Beijing is less than 72 hours, you need to inform your airline about the free transit need and fill a form, then you will be granted a transit permit after arrival at the airport.
