Residence permit for parents

I am a foreigner working in Shanghai and married to a Chinese. My parents visit multiple times a year to help taking care of our son and stay for prolonged periods. Is it possible to apply for a residence permit for them and if so, what is required?

I am afraid they can't. This policy is applied to the foreigners whose children under 18 being taken care of in PRC and whose parents are overseas Chinese or Chinese citizens who hold permanent residence permits in other countries.
