round trip from US to Taiwan with less than 3 days transit in Shanghai both ways

I am planning to fly from Los Angeles, US, to Shanghai, stay for less than three days and fly to Taiwan. Spend a week in Taiwan and then fly back to Shanghai and stay for less than 72 hours and then fly back to LA. Can I do so without a visa? I am US citizen.
