Multiple tickets for 72 hours free transit in Beijing

Hi,

Do the tickets have to be in the same reservation to be eligible for the 72h transit? Or can they be a round trip to Beijing from USA and another round trip from Beijing to Hong Kong that would make the return trip Hong Kong/ Beijing/ USA but not on the same reservation?
