Getting from Beijing South Railway station to Capital Airport on Friday early evening

Hi. I will be travelling from Tianjin to Capital Int. Airport on a Friday afternoon in early June. I hear some bad reports of using a car transfer in terms of crazy drivers, so was looking at using the High Speed Train, arriving at BJ South between 7.30 - 8.30pm.
The options onward are taxi and subway. From searching online it seems it may be hard to get a taxi at this time, but that the subway is also very crowded.
Am I crazy to try either, should I just stick with a car transfer from Tianjin? Will both opions be fairly easy by 8.30pm?
I don't have to be at the airport until 9.30pm, and I will only have a small trolley bag. I would like to try the subway, but some of the photos make it look packed.
If I was to use the subway, would it be better to go to Jiaomen West and then line 10 around to Sayuanqiao and the Airport Express onward, and avoid line 2?

Thanks very much

To honest, I do not think it is necessary to take the High Speed train to reach the south railway station and then change to take the subway to reach.
As far as I know, from Tianjin Tianhuan Bus Station, there are direct buses to reach Capital airport directly. The bus journey takes around two hours and a half. For the timetable, you can refer to https://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/beijing/transportation/airport-shuttle.htm.
It is not suggested to take a taxi from Tianjin directly.
The choice to take line 10 is a better choice. It will be little crowded on line 2.

Sorry, but I should have been more specific in my earlier request. I will working the day in TEDA in the Binhai area, and the last bus leaves Tianjin at 6.30pm, and so I am not guaranteed to be able to get there in time after I finish work. Estimate is an hour to get into the bus station from where I will be working.
So I would actually be looking at catching the 6.19pm or 7.29pm trains from Tanggu, and arriving at BJS at 7.18 or 8.28pm respectively. Thanks again.

As for your case, you can catch the train at 7:29pm. And I heard that by subway, it may take around an hour and fifty minutes to reach the airport from South Railway Station. So time is a little tight to right reach there at 9:30pm.

Therefore, to catch time, at South Train Station, it is suggested to take line 4 to Xuanwumen and then transfer to line 2 to Dongzhimen, where the Express Train can take you to the airport soon.
