About:Apply for China Visa in a Third Country

I teach in South Korea and want to go to China for under 24 hrs

I am an American citizen teaching in South Korea. I want to go to Beijing for the weekend. Do I need to apply for a tourist or transit visa if I am flying back to Korea from Beijing?
