Yes, you need to get visa in advance. If for business, following documents are required:
1) Original Passport with a minimum validity of six (6) months and at least one blank page in it.
2) Application form: One completed and signed Application Form.
3) A copy of the passport photo page with the issue and expiry dates of the passport on it.
4) A copy of residency with a minimum validity of six (6) months there.
5) A copy of ID there with a minimum validity of six (6) months.
6) Photo: one photo of 2x2 square inch (black & white or color is acceptable) glued or stapled on the application form.
7) Visa Notifications Form from an authorized Chinese Unit, or invitation letters from the host company, meeting or exhibition organizers, etc.
You can apply in person or by someone else entrusted. The regular processing time is 5 working days.
