About:Beijing Great Wall

My siblings and I (all between ages of 18-25 and athletic) are headed to the wall next week - March 23rd, 2013. We were extremely excited for beauty and challenges of Simatai

Hi,

but it seems that the location is still closed. Does anyone have any recommendations for another spot which would be a challenging hike as well as spectacular views, without as many tourists? Is Jingshanling the second best?

Second question - what's the best method of transport very early in the morning from Forbidden City (hotel located there) to Jinshanling (or whichever Great Wall spot is picked from the above question)? We may try for a private car for the most flexibility, but unsure where to find a reliable driver/company.

Thanks for all your help,
- Excited family

Yes, Jinshanling is a good option for you to go. From the Forbidden City, you can take subway line 1 from Tian'anmen Square area and transfer to subway line 2 at Jianguomen. Then get off at Dongzhimen and take the special tourist bus at Dongzhimen bus terminus in Beijing. The special tourist bus leaves from Beijing at 07:30 and back from Jinshanling at 14:40.

Thanks a lot Frank! Quick question, if we hiked up all the way to Simatai from Jingshanling, could we get to any of the high peaks or will they all be closed off due to the renovations of the Simatai entrance?

Yes, you can get to any of the high peaks except several peaks which are too dangerous to hike up.
