About:Chinese Embasy in Ireland

Airline ticket

I dont understand if I have to book and pay for a return flight to China and show this when applying for my L visa. What if the visa is denied? Will a flight itineary do? What about the accomodation. Do I also have to pay for my first night in advance and what happens if I am denied a visa?

Generally, the embassy will issue you a visa if you provide all documents they required. Why do you worry about this? so far as I know, they seldom deny applications for travel.
