You should apply through CVASC in your place with your passport, application form, photo, air ticket booking record (round trip) and hotel reservation in Shanghai. Fee is GBP 66 under regular 4 working day processing.

Thank you for your response. My journey includes other places. I will be flying from Manchester (UK) to South Korea, then on to Macau (where I understand I do not need a VISA?) and then to Shanghai before flying back to South Korea and eventually back to Manchester. Will this be a problem or slow down the VISA application process?

You are right you are exempted from visa to Macao. Also, it is ok for you to travel from South Korea to Shanghai as you listed above. This will not be a problem at all. Make sure apply Chinese visa in advance in UK before leaving for South Korea, becuase the embassy there does not issue visas to temporary visitors.
