It is mainly use in these areas now:
1. making firecrackers or fireworks;
2. When constructing the expressway or railway, the gunpowder is used to explode the mountain to make a tunnel;
3. I heard that if a country launch a rocket, the gunpowder is fired to be used as boosting fuel.

The original gunpowder is not used today except in fireworks and firecrackers. Similar to how it was mainly used centuries ago. It has been replaced by a superior chemical compound and used mainly in bullets. Much more advanced compounds are used for explosives.
One could say that the original gunpowder was the starting point for these modern compounds.
