About:Chinese Embassy in Australia

Do I need a letter of invitation if I am applying for a family visit visa, this is my fifth visit

The last time I visited China (Shanghai) to visit my daughter and her family the consulate asked for a letter of invitation before issueing a visa, but now in the requirement section of the application no mention is made of this, has the procedure changed or was I wrongly asked before in may 2012
