About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Two year residency requirement for adoption non-orphan

Hello,
My wife and I are adopting her nephew in China and I have been told that I need to obtain custody of the boy and live in China for two years with the boy. I have my own company in the States and am able to work from whatever country I am in, so living in China is not an issue, but getting the right kind of Visa is. What kind of VISA would I get since I wont be working for an employer there and will not be going to school.

You can apply for a family visit visa and then seek for temporary resident permit which is valid for one year. Before it expires, you can extend it. Please read this page for more information:
