In April after visiting xian, I will be travelling back to Shanghai

As the trains between will not stop over for several hours or longder along the journey, you have to choose a certain place to go before going back to Shanghai. My suggestion is that you can take a train to Suzhou, where you can enjoy yourself vey much by Tongli Ancient Town and Sister Gardens. After your visiting, you can take the direct train to Shanghai in about 40min.
