About:Chinese Etiquette

I'm trying to find a custom for meeting in-laws (American) to in-laws (who are Chinese)

My daughters in- laws are very nice & good people but somehow due to different cultures we've gotten off to a rocky start. They recently moved to where our kids live & my husband & I so we see each other more often. The Mother-in-law of my son-in-law is Chinese. I was thinking that if there was some kind of ceremony, custom or gift, etc. that I could give, to show her some respect & the desire to be friends. Communicating hasn't work well. They seem to interpreted what my husband & I say in a negative way. My daughter & son-in-law have some difficulty with this also. Help.... I would like to have harmony or at least friendship within our family, if possible.
