About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

In order to qualify does the flight in and out have to be on the same 'ticket'?

That seems like a scenario that never happens. I intend to fly from the USA to Shanghai, explore the city for less than 72 hours, then fly from Shanghai to Kuala Lumpur. Would I qualify for a visa free stay? and if so, does that mean I do not need any paperwork etc done in advance? Thanks!!!!

Yes, you are right. You are qualified for the free-visa transit. Just show your valid passport, visa of your destination country and connecting flight ticket, and you are allowed to go out of the airport within 72h. Thus no paperwork is needed to be prepared in advance. Take easy!
