short tourist visit from uk to shanghai

I would like to visit a friend in Shanghai for a weekend. Can I use the 72-hour visa exemption if I fly London-Shanghai-London?

No, you need to apply for a Chinese visa. As for this visa exemption, the departure place and destination can not be same country, and you should make Shanghai a transit only.
