About:Chinese Consulate in Brisbane

Connecting flights in Beijing and Guangshou for 17 hours

My husband and I will be travelling from Australia to the Philippines by China Southern Airlines. There is a 17 hour- waiting for the connecting flight, do we need a visa to go out of the airport for sightseeing or to go to a hotel to wait for the flight? We are New Zealand citizens travelling with normal New Zealand passport.

Then on our way back to Australia, there will be another 17 hour waiting in Guangshou airport. Same thing to happen as in Beijing. Please advise. Can I present a copy of your answer to the Chinese authorities when we reach Beijing/Guangshou? Thanks.

You are exempted from visa requirement if you transit in Beijing for less than 72 hours with confirmed flight ticket. If you want to go out for a hotel, you can apply for a transit permit at the airport. This is new policy operated in Beijing and Shanghai from January 1, 2013.

For your return trip to Australia via Guangzhou, you can also apply for a stay permit at the airport if you need to leave the airport. You can also confirm this with the airline if possible. My answer here is reference, Alicia, maybe the authorities are too busy to read it :)
