About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Australia to Shanghai to Beijing to London?

My partner and I (Australians) are flying to London from Melbourne.
Our first flight stops twice in China - first at Shanghai, then again at Beijing where we wait 16 hours for our connecting flight to London.
Am I correct in concluding we do not need to apply for any visa for China? We will stay in the airport for the duration of our transit.
