hire a car or from Shenzhen to Shantou

Can I hire a car or from Shenzhen to Shantou? How much it will cost and is it save to drive in China?
where is the best stopping point mid way for a day visit between Shenzhen and Shantou?

Yes, you can hire on your own. It is hard to tell you the hiring fee, because it depends on how long will you rent it and the car's brands. Last year, I rented a car from eHi Car Service for a day in about 101RMB in Shenzhen. It is save in China.
There is no big shopping area along the way, but you can go to see the sea in Shanwei
