Hi, her old Chinese passport is required for her 1st China visa on USA passport. So, if she had been issued Chinese visa before, then her Chinese passport is not required, you can just provide her previous Chinese visa for application. Otherwise, you may try to provide Adoption Paperwork, and her Birth Certificate.

Thank you, however what are the chances that she would be denied a Chinese visa without the original Chinese passport at the time of adoption? I want to book our flight before the prices to up.
I have her birth certficate and China adoption certificate.

For this you may need to contact the embassy directly or entrust an agency for application. Sorry I can not provide certain answer since the consular officers have the final say to the result.
