Most of buses between the two places leaving from Kunming Bus Station and there is a bus in about half an hour to an hour.
For the trains, there are two trains everyday, one at night and the other during day time.
I used to take the trains, but it will cost about 11 hours to reach Dali, but I got a hard sleeper, so I think it is good. In my opinion, if you can get a hard sleeper, you can choose to take trains, otherwise, buses are better.
Hope it is useful for you.

If you break your journey up with a visit to Dali then use the bus service between Kunming and Dali (4-5 hours) and the train between Dali and Lijiang (2 hours).

Thanks very much. What is the difference between soft and hard sleepers? I am told it is just the number of bunks in the room. Also, which is best city for tourist, Lijiang or Dali...in your opinion.

Yes, the biggest difference lies on the bunks. The soft sleeper has better environment and more comfortable than hard sleeper according to my experience.
I think you may find more detail information on https://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/tickets.htm. Hope it is useful for you.
In my opinion, I think Lijiang is better. It is a romantic place. Very nice.
