visa requirements for us citizens visiting family for 13 days

I am preparing to visit my family, all US citizens, who are living in China. When I received my passport last spring, the post office told me I do not need a visa to enter China. In reading documents required, it looks fairly clear that a tourist L is necessary.
Please help me.

You can ask for an invitation letter from your family, and their copies of passport, valid Chinese visa and residence permit to apply for a family visit L. The processing takes 4 working days.
