If you are holding UK passport, you enjoy 72-visa free for the transit in Beijing since Jan.1 , 2013. When you arrive at Beijing, show the tickets and passports and the Arrival/Departure Card you filled on the flight at the immigration counter to apply the 72-hour permit, then claim the luggage if you need, and then you can leave the airport.
