Hi, there is a new visa exemption policy for Beijing released yesterday, that is about direct transit at Beijing airport. From Jan 1st 2013, you are visa-free for up to 72 hours. But if your trip is not a transit, you need to apply for a China visa in advance.

Thanks a ton for your prompt answer! I suppose I can not just go to Beijing and go out to the city, right? Or is there a chance the immigration would let me in?
However, I my wife and son are Austrian citizen and would like to visit Beijing for the fact at this time we are in the Philippines and thus a side trip to China would be nice and not as costly if going from Europe. Now, all we want are 2 or three nights in Beijing - so, while not in Austria, do we have to book any return flight and then get a visa in the embassy in Manila? Is that all we have got to show up with at the embassy or is there something else? In the Philippines we are currently balikbayans which does entitle all of us to stay in the country for up to one year. I also have a problem to figure out how long it takes to get one - that is I have to book the flight s first and then proceed to the embassy and thereby do not know how long it would take to get the it in Manila or if there is even the risk of being turned down - and maybe cannot even cancel flight or for quite a penalty? I would greatly appreciate your regply once more:)

If you are entitled to stay in Philippine for a year, personally I think it is no problem for you to get visas in Manila. You can submit applications for all the three members to the embassy, and also pick up on their behalf. Personal appearance is required only when consular officers deem it necessary. Regular processing takes 4 working days. But for tourism, return ticket and hotel reservation are required unless you have booked your tour with a Chinese travel agency. You can contact the embassy directly for confirmation.
