About:Chinese Embassy in New Zealand

Work Permit to China for at least 6 months.

I have been offered a job in China, however the job will require me to be there for at least 6 months. Is it possible to obtain a residence permit for that period of time, and apply for a work visa as needed, or would I need a multiple entries of (what type), and return to NZ to apply for it. Is there a better option than all of this?

You just need to apply for a single entry work Z visa. You are required to apply for a residence permit within 30 days after entry with it. The permit will then works as multi entries.

yes, but does it mean I can keep applying for work visas every 3 months from within china, or would i need to come back to nz? The latter seems to be rather inefficient and somewhat silly to do.

No, it is not necessary. The single entry Z needs to be changed into a residence permit after entry. The permit is valid for a year generally and can be renewed based on your working contract. You can use it to visit NZ and reenter again. It works as multi-entry visa anyway.
