About:Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

Domestic to international transit in Guangzhou

I am going to be flying Ningbo-GZ-Paris at the end of January, and am unclear about whether I will need to pick up my luggage and re-check in when transferring there. The information on this page suggests baggage claim is necessary, whereas the information on the China Southern website suggests it is not. Can anyone clarify? Is there a blanket rule about whether or not baggage reclaim is necessary on a domestic to international transit in CAN, or does it depend on what airline you are flying with?

Hi, James. I read the information on the website you linked. It is the situation where your luggage is consigned that you don't need check it in 'cause the Airline will directly take your luggage to the next flight. Otherwise, you have to re-check in your luggage in the airport.
For example, if you use Southern Airline along the journey - from Ningbo to Canton then to Paris, the airline wil certainly help you handle the luggage. In this case, no need to re-check the luggage.
Hope you are clear now.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Tilly. However, my particular situation is slightly more complicated than just using one airline, because my NGB-CAN flight is China Southern 5237 (operated by China Eastern), whereas my CAN-CDG connecting flight is China Southern 783 (operated by Air France). Do you think your second paragraph information would still apply?

Hi James

I will travel to Australia in December via China Southern and i was really worried.Do i need Chinese visa or not?Do i need to claim my luggage. I know most countries do not ask you any visa coz it is transit, but after reading China Southern web site,i found they can NOT guarantee that.So I called the KLM because they will take my first flight to Canton.

They said it is 50-50 ,they will label my luggage and send it directly to Australia BUT if this did not happen than you must re -check the luggage and here you need to show them a visa.

I get really scared I don't want to be send back and spoil my vacation.I will ask for visa and it is Double entry because I will take the same Airport on my way back.To ask for visa and it is a tourism visa, you need to book 2 nights for 2 ways at least.I found this site because i wanted to know how i can take a taxi to the hotel.I hope you contact the Chinese embassy in your country and ask them directly,do not trust the travel agencies, they only need your money.

So it is up to you to have a visa and be happy in your long journey or take a risk?
