There was an uneven distribution of wealth. First, court intrigues increased, leading to weak rulers. Second, the gap between the rich and the poor increased as taxes rose to cover the cost of running the vast empire.

Society became less stable as taxes kept increasing to pay for advancements, peasants lost more and more of their land, and corruption increased in the government. Revolts in the late second and early third centuries weakened China and it collapsed in AD 220.
