About:Chinese Consulate in Melbourne

My partner is Australian and I'am British, we are flying to the UK via Shanghai for Christmas

We are in transit in Shanghai overnight but less than 24 hours and will stay at a hotel. Do both of us need a visa? You mentioned in a previous response no visa is required for 48hrs or less - is that for both Australians and British?
