Hi Laura, may I know where are you reside in UK? If you live within consular jurisdiction of consulate in Edinburgh (Scotland, Northern Ireland), no appointment is required and you can lodge application to the office of the consuloate in person or by someone else entrusted. If not, you need to make an appointment from http://www.visaforchina.org/ according to your residency. You can apply by post if you do not want to go in person.

Hi, you can vist in person with required documents. Please refer to page https://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/united_kingdom.htm and check Consular Districts of Chinese Embassy/Consulates in UK.
