I have an Exhibition to attend in Hong Kong on 27-30 October 2012, Is it still possible for me to apply for visa and get it before the commencement of the exhibition

It depends, you should better contact and submit your application to Chinese embassy asap. Generally, time is enough if your application will not be sent to HK for approval.
