should I take any special precautions while on visit with regard to safety/ security etc.

You can take either US dollars or Chinese RMB when you come to China. You do not take the special precautions before your journey. Take it easy. All you have remember is that you should not take so much cash with you. 5,000 US dollars or 20,000 CNY is permitted.
