visa application requirements

I plan to visit Shanghai to visit a trade show scheduled on November. This is my 1st time to visit Shanghai though I have visited Shenzhen I long long time before. From what I am reading, bank statements are required and my bank account does not really show big balances. Are the figures really that important and if so how much is needed?
