do i need to hold return Air Ticket if my visa is L and valid for 1 year?

my wife is Chinese and i have L visa valid for one year which i got after marriage. i am going to meet my wife in Guanzhou so do i need to hold return Air ticket? the return date is not fixed yet and will decide later only so is it mandatory to buy or not? Thanks
