Yes, you should register at the local police station after entry. The temporary residence permit is issued to foreign visitors with student visa or work visa who will stay in China for less than a year.

All foreigners are required to register to Local Police into 24 hours after arrival. That doesn't give you any residence right.

If you want to get a resident permit or any other visa, you need apply to the Entry & Exit dept in the city your are visiting, for that you need the document you get at Police office

For resident visa you need to be student from a Chinese Univ, and the Univ should provide you with a Letter of Invitation and a Visa Application form already filled by them and their stamp. You also need your passport, visa and 4 photos, and make a copy of all documents in case asked.

Hi Sobia, generally, you do not need to get the residence permit if you only stay in China for 180 days as the duration on your L visa. The residence permit is issued to X and Z visa holders.
