You are able to get a residence permit of China after you live in China for five years or through working in China.

Yes, because you are not married, you can not get a long term visa for family visit nor a temporary residence permit unless you are working in China. If possible, you can apply for a one year multiple entries tourist visa, but it requires an exit from mainland China every certain period as the duration of each entry.
