How long are you going to study in China? if it is for longer than 6 months, you need to apply for a student visa. If you want to go before your study, you can apply for a tourist visa. Generally, it has duration of 30 days, but you can apply for visa extension twice at PSB in China where you stay, with 30 days each. So, I think it is ok for your plan.
