About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

Why do I need a letter of invitation for a tourist visa (L)?

I went to the consulate today and was told I have to come back with a letter of invitation and a copy of my son's passport and employment document who is living in China. I have already visited him twice since 2009. Why the change?

They checked out that your purpose to China is for family visit as you mention it in your application form. So, just follow what they want for application this time. Tourist visa L for sight-seeing does not require any invitation letter.
