About:Chinese Embassy in Italy

I am an Australian on holiday in Europe and I head to China in about 7 weeks.

Is it possible to apply for my Chinese visa when I visit Rome in a couple of weeks?

I don't think so, since you have to provide your residence permit or work visa to apply for a China visa in a third country other than your home country. I think you can enter China from Hk, and apply for a visa to mainland China there.
