Is it possible to obtain tourist chinese visa without invitation letter?

Dear Sir/Madame, my husband and I would like to visit Beijing and Hong Kong from Almaty on our own without help of travel agency. We are both nationals of Kazakhstan. The information from the Embassy's web site states that we have to provide an invitation letter for application. Whereas we were planning to arrange our own tickets and hotels. Do think it is possible to receive them without invitation letter?
