Can I get a VISA without booking a hotel reservation in advance?

To Whom It May Concern,

I'm planning to travel to China in July. According to your website, it seems I need to pre-book a hotel before I can get a Chinese VISA. However I'm planning to travel to many cities and rural areas for 2-3 weeks, so I cannot make hotel arrangements in advance for each night of my trip. Can I still get a VISA?

Also, do I still need a hotel reservation if I can stay with friends?

Thank you

If you will stay with your friends, an invitation letter may be required. So, just book hotel for one or two nights for application. It is ok and you can fill the application form with a general travel itinerary.
BTW, as I know, you need to apply through a travel agency if you will apply in Japan.
