Do i need invitation letter to visit my brother?

hello am a malawian student studying in russia& want to apply for a chinese visa to visit my brother who iz studying in china for like 5 days,so what kind visa should i apply for?& does my brother need to send me an invitation letter?& do i need a hotel booking in china?
