Transit in Shanghai

I am travelling Sydney to London with China Eastern airlines and have an enforced an overnight stopover in Shanghai as their flights from Sydney do not connect on the same day through to London. The airline will arrange a hotel for me but my question is do i need a visa as I will be leaving the airport but it will be for less than 24 hours
