Where do I get a Chinese residence permit for my visa application from?

Hi, David. There may be a misunderstanding. As I know, applying a visa do not require Chinese residence permit. Z Visa, X Visa, or J-1 Visa holders must apply for a residence permit at the local public security authorities within 30 days of entry into China.
