I am arriving in Urumqi at about midnight and do not want to take a taxi (I have heard that is a bit hard for English Speakers).

You can take the shuttle bus at airport and the bus stop running when the last flight arrives in the evening.

Hi,If you arrive at midnight you have only the choice which  is taxi, its sure that taxi drivers cannt speak English at all. Its better have hotel's card or hotel name/address written by Chinese Character or Pinyin. Just show it to the driver, they will take you there easiliy.
