Invitation letter for independent traveller to China

I am a New Zealand citizen applying for an L visa in Australia where I am a resident, I am only wanting to stay for 3 nights in Guangzhou on my way to Canada and am unsure if I need an invitation letter or where to get one if I do require one? If someone could please inform me as I have found mixed information on the net. Thank you.

You are not required invitation letter to get tourist visa for China in Australia. Just provide your passport, application form V2011A and V2011B, photo and Australian residence permit as well as the entry record.
