necessary to book an appointment, or just show up at embassy in Paris with application?

I am going to be in Paris, and need to apply for a z visa. do i go to the embassy or the consulate, and do i need to make an appointment before hand? if i need to make an appointment, is there a site on the internet i can do this, or do i need to make a phone call to book the appointment?
